Accessing Electronic Resources

Licensing contracts with journal, book and database publishers require the Norris Library to restrict access to USC faculty, staff and students registered in the current or past semester.  Select affiliates may contact the Technology Support Center to check their eligibility for access.

Off-campus & USC Wireless Access

  • From the Norris Library website, click on the link to an eJournal, eBook or database or to an article from the FindIt@USC link.
  • When prompted, log in with your USC NetID  and password (same NetId used for your email or Workday account).
  • You remain logged in until you close your browser window or leave your computer idle for more than 90 minutes.


Frequently Asked Questions


I’m using Internet Explorer (IE) and trying to do a search in the E-Resources search box.  When I get to the search results page (Advanced Search with Search by Keyword and Browse buttons), no results are provided.  Also, from the Advanced Search page, browsing for a particular title doesn’t provide a list.

This problem occurs in IE version 8 or 9, espcially from LAC+USC Medical Center computers.  Install IE 11 or Chrome. If your computer is located in the LAC+USC Medical Center, call the Medical Center Help Desk at (323) 409-2100 and ask to have Chrome installed on your computer.

When I click on the tabs for E-Resources, Library Catalog or Library Website, the search box doesn’t change and the arrow next to the tab doesn’t appear.  Also, the Today’s Hours information isn’t formating properly.  

This problem occurs in Internet Explorer when one of the security custom settings for active scripting isn’t enabled.  You can change the setting as follows:

Tools (from the menus toolbar)

Internet options


Custom level

Scripting (near the bottom of the Settings list)

Active scripting: enabled

I tried to link to PubMed from the Norris Library website but the USC Login page says “authentication failure.”  

This message is displayed when the user’s USC NetID/password entered to access a USC-licensed resource does not identify you as USC faculty, staff or student.  If you receive this message in error, contact the Technology Support Center. This message may also mean that your password has expired.  Click on the Forgot Password link or go to to change your password.

I can get to most resources on the Norris Library website but when I try to access a specific journal it won’t let me get to the article I want.

The resource website may be temporarily down or there may be a problem with our subscription.  Please report these problems so that we can correct them.

As a USC alumnus can I access the library’s electronic journals and books?

When in the Norris Library, members of USC health sciences program alumni groups may use key-operated computer workstations to access electronic resources.  For more information see the Your Eligibility page.  USC alumni also have remote access to the Proquest Research Library that includes thousands of general and scholarly titles, and provides full-text for a significant number of articles.  Additional information is provided on the USC Alumni Association website.
