Advanced PubMed Searching – Tales From Beyond the MeSH!

Are you looking for the most relevant citations in the shortest amount of time, or do you want to feel confident you’ve left no stone unturned? Either way, Advanced PubMed will show you techniques to conquer PubMed.

Learn about:

  1. Clinical Queries
    2. Topic-Specific Queries
    3. Using the Advanced Search screen
    4. Boolean Operators

Don’t forget to bring your own questions, concerns, or complaints! Our librarians will help you take charge of PubMed!

Citation Management Software: Which One Is “Write” For You?

Citation Management software lets you save citations and quickly format papers in almost any bibliographic style – APA, AMA, NLM and even in styles for specific journals.  It’s not always easy to know which citation management software is right for you.  Some people prefer EndNote; others love EndNote Web or RefWorks; still others prefer the free Zotero program.  This workshop will compare these four programs so you can make your own choice.

EndNote Desktop

This workshop is for those who have purchased the EndNote program. Bring your laptop with your copy of EndNote, and learn about personalizing EndNote to work with USC’s subscriptions to journals and databases. Bring your questions about EndNote and we’ll answer them (or refer you to further support).

EndNote Online

Find yourself wrestling with the task of managing your references for your research paper or project? Come to this hands on EndNote Web workshop and learn to tackle the basics of using this online citation management tool. During this workshop, we’ll be covering how to create your free online account as a USC affiliate, save references from common databases, import references, organize and share references, and use the Cite-While-Your-Write tool to manage your bibliography in Microsoft Word.

Neglected Databases for Clinicians

Do you know what these questions have in common?

  • Why do some patients take all their medications, and some don’t?
  • Is vibration therapy or neuromuscular electrical stimulation more effective for muscle pain?
  • If an American returns from a visit to Eritrea with a respiratory infection, do they need to be quarantined?

Give up? They are all very hard to answer quickly and accurately using PubMed alone—PubMed simply doesn’t include the best journals and data to investigate these topics.  Come to our “Neglected Databases for Clinicians” workshop for an introduction to three databases that will help you answer questions similar to the ones above. We’ll cover PsycINFO, a premier psychological database; CINAHL, the literature of nursing and allied health, including occupational and physical therapy; and GIDEON, containing summaries of information on emerging infectious diseases and travel medicine.

PubMed: Maximize Your Potential, Minimize Your Frustration

Do you ever feel like searching PubMed is a mystifying ordeal? That perhaps you’re not seeing every citation you think you should? If your PubMed experience is leaving you frustrated, it is time to show that database who is in charge (hint: it is you). This workshop includes:

Searching PubMed with added efficiency
Strategies for keeping current
Using MyNCBI to organize searches/results
New features
